One Year of Blogging

Impossible as it sounds to us we have just entered our second year of blogging. We certainly did not know exactly what we were after when we started our weblog but it has now become an integral part of Rugles and a way of letting our readers know our opinion and ideas about news and current affairs that have to do with search engine positioning optimization and web marketing.

As we blow our first candle we hope we will be able to provide to our readers our independent opinions for the years to come.

A Bit Slow but Still Here

We are running a bit slow in our weblog lately due to overwhelming work. We hope we will be back in normal state of oprations within the next week or so.

Google reaches 8 billion pages

According to the latest post in the Google blog (and the notice on the first page of Google) Google now crawls 8 billion pages. According to the blog:

Comprehensiveness is not the only important factor in evaluating a search engine, but it's invaluable for queries that only return a few results. For example, now when I search for friends who previously generated only a handful of results, I see double that number. These are not just copies of the same pages, but truly diverse results that give more information. The same is true for obscure topics, where you're now significantly more likely to find relevant and diverse information about the subjects. You may also notice that the result counts for broader queries (with thousands or millions of results) have gone up substantially. However, as with any search engine, these are estimates, and the real benefit lies with the queries that generate fewer results.

The documents in Google's index are in dozens of file types from HTML to PDF, including PowerPoint, Flash, PostScript and JavaScript. Together these pages represent a good chunk of the world's information, but hardly all of it. That's why we keep building more advanced systems for crawling the web and creating more sophisticated indices to sort what we find. So 8 billion pages is a milestone worth noting, but it's not the end of the road. The real test is how well we do in finding what you want from within those pages. We'll keep improving that too.

Its very interesting that we see Flash and JavaScript mentioned in the types of documents indexed by Google. Yahoo! and MSN at the moment seem to be losing the total number of docs count but the race is still on...

Google Adwords for Professionals

Some good news for professional advertisers in Google Adwords, or for people that want to manage more than one Google adwords account. Google has launched the Google Advertising Professionals center with the ability to use 'My client center' for managing all clients accounts through a central screen, a learning center where you can get information hints and tips on google adwords, and a new 'Google Advertising Professionals Certification'.

Dont be surprised if it is not working 100% at the moment as Google is still changing things so you may find you may have to wait a bit to enroll in the service (or see the streaming videos).

Do Less, Have More

This is an issue very close to my heart. Joyce Wycoff from thinksmart.com talks about thinking time - or lack of - in organizations.

So what are you doing or what could you do as an individual to create thinking time for your self and for the people who work with or for you?

Election Zeitgeist

Google has a Zeitgeist Special Edition just for todays elections. Some interesting data but unfortunately not conclusive enough to suggest a winner...

Something Wrong With Google?

I dont really know if this is just me, but over the past week or so I have been hitting on quite a few pages listed in the Google SERPS which are either nonexistent (with a 404 error) or with a 'This Page Cannot be displayed'. Am I the only one seeing this? is this my luck of the week, or more people see similar things in their searches?

Definitely very strange...
