Gmail: A Google Approach to Email

I have to admit that when I saw the Google Press Release on the launch of their new service I thought it was an April fool's hoax and I still cannot confidently say that I believe in it.

In any case, the Google Gmail site is up at the moment - although there are no ways of registering for Gmail at the moment (very strange that...).

According to the details presented Gmail will give a fresh approach to mailing as the power will be given by the Google serach engine and almost unlimited (1Gb) space.

The four important issues in Gmail will be:

The service will be free and will be 'financed' by the display of Adsense contextual adverts - so more money from advertisers with doubtful ROI at this stage.

There have been Google leaks on this email service based on contextual advertsising for some time - and frankly this is the only thing at this stage that makes me think that it may not be a hoax after all - and this is an enoromous step that Google is taking in a completely different world. Google is slowly becoming a portal-like feature that will eventually have as many heads as Hydra. What will soon come as a problem is the integration of all this into a 'single' service. Google will have to face this problem sooner or later.

Its just an April Fools day prank. Not worth a write-up :)

I don't see why everyone's so convinced this is an April fool. It's not particularly hard to believe, and it's not as if most people would get near that 1GB limit, so the average space per user would be considerably lower than 1GB.

Well, this definitely is a good omen. I hope google will not invade our mailboxs and usher in a new phase in this era of mass-mailing.

I saw that page www.gmail.com this morning, but now URL is down at least 2 hours. My point, it's a Fool Day joke and nothing else.

google has tapped into what all real geeks have always wanted... what we've wanted more than good sex or good food or lots of cash...

An email account with LOTS of disk space.

google is brilliant. whether this is a hoax or not.

Harry2,

A couple of points...

If this is an April fool's joke, do you think that the folks that have given the Internet some of the best searches ever are really willing to risk being disadvantaged during their upcoming IPO?

You make a great point on integration. However, so far -- based on their "labs" site -- they seem to be doing a very good job of "putting things together." Further, remember that they're falling all over themselves saying that this is an "ongoing testing rollout" and probably won't be offered on the google.com page for some time (if at all).

In my view, this is one of the best Internet marketing strategies ever, and if Google does as well with email as with searching (even their ads are second to none insofar as general relevancy is concerned), they're going to be the best.

One final note... I use their "news alerts" facility all the time. It has been in "beta" for the longest time, yet has not failed me yet. If this is Google's version of "beta," can one imagine how good the "final" will be, in "alerts" or "email?" Besides, what better way to get something tested than to "caveat" a service under "beta"!

Enjoy.

I agree with you (as you can see from the next post). This is one of the best marketing strategies that I have seen recently and it certainly shows that the 'guys' know how to do their job in many fronts. (I wont call it a problem with their IPO even if it is still a joke).

Frankly I see some 'integration' problems developing but I can definitely say that I trust their brilliance in grouping things together properly. I just want to feel important enough (and not one of the hoi polloi ;)) to have my word and opinion on this.
